"Back to the Future" Trilogy: How it Predicted the Future
In the 1980s, "Back to the Future" movies took the world by storm with their time-traveling adventures, quirky characters and catchy tunes. Three decades later, the movies still have a special place in the hearts of many fans, not just for their entertainment value but also for their surprisingly accurate predictions of future technologies and trends. In this blog, we will explore some of the most notable examples of how the "Back to the Future" trilogy predicted the future.
Video Conferencing
One of the most memorable scenes in "Back to the Future Part II" shows Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, talking to his boss via a video conference on a large flat-screen TV. While video conferencing technology was still in its infancy in the 1980s, it has become ubiquitous in the modern world, especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic that forced many people to work and communicate from home.
Hands-Free Gaming
Another scene in "Back to the Future Part II" shows a young boy playing an arcade game using only his hand gestures, without touching any buttons or joysticks. This was a futuristic idea back in 1989 when the movie was released, but it has since become a reality thanks to motion-sensing game consoles such as the Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Kinect and Sony PlayStation Move.
Personalized Advertising
In the same scene where Marty plays the hands-free game, he walks past a digital billboard that addresses him by name and promotes a product based on his browsing history. This may have seemed like a creepy or impossible concept back then, but today, personalized advertising is a common marketing tactic used by many online platforms and retailers, based on cookies, search history, location data and other factors.
Smartwatches
In "Back to the Future Part II," Doc Brown, played by Christopher Lloyd, wears a wristwatch that can communicate with his DeLorean time machine and perform various functions such as opening doors, checking the weather and tracking his vital signs. While the movie's version of the smartwatch may seem bulky and primitive by today's standards, the concept of a wearable device that can connect to the internet, make calls, and monitor health has become a reality with the rise of devices such as the Apple Watch, Fitbit, and Samsung Galaxy Watch.
3D Movies
While the "Jaws 19" joke in "Back to the Future Part II" may have been a playful jab at Hollywood's tendency to milk a franchise, the idea of a movie shown in 3D was not far-fetched. Today, 3D films are a common sight in many cinemas, especially for blockbusters and animation movies. While some people may find 3D movies gimmicky or headache-inducing, they are a testament to the technological advancements that have been made since the "Back to the Future" movies were released.
The Future is What You Make It
While the "Back to the Future" trilogy may not have predicted every aspect of the future, it got many things right, often with a mix of humor, imagination and creativity. As Doc Brown famously said, "Your future is whatever you make it, so make it a good one." Perhaps, one day, we will have flying cars too. Only time will tell.
